Genting Highlands
A cool, foggy hilltop resort an hour from KL — cable car, casino, theme park, and weather that does what it wants.
Genting Highlands is a resort built on a mountaintop about an hour outside KL, and the whole point of it is the altitude: it sits high enough that the air is noticeably cooler than the city, and it's wrapped in cloud and mist often enough that "cold and foggy" is a realistic forecast, not a fluke. Go for the Awana SkyWay cable car ride up, Genting SkyWorlds theme park, and Malaysia's only casino — and go in expecting a big commercial resort, not a nature trip.
What's actually up there
The cable car is the reason a lot of people come at all — the Awana SkyWay is one of the longest cable car rides in the world, climbing from the base station up through cloud forest to the resort at the top, and on a clear run the views over the hills are the best part of the day. At the top, Resorts World Genting is really a cluster of hotels, malls, and attractions stacked around the casino, which is the one legal casino in Malaysia — it's 21-plus and there's a dress code (no shorts, sandals, or vests for men), so check what's expected before you go up if that's the plan. Genting SkyWorlds is the newer outdoor theme park, built around film and animation IP, with the rides split between family-friendly and a genuine thrill-ride cluster for anyone chasing a scare at altitude. There's also a run of indoor attractions — arcades, an indoor theme park space, and enough air-conditioned mall to fill a rainy afternoon, which up here is most afternoons.

On the way up by road, most buses and cars pass Chin Swee Caves Temple, a Taoist temple built into the hillside with a pagoda and a set of steep, colourful steps — worth the stop if you're driving, since it's easy to miss from the cable car.
Getting there and how long to stay
The standard route is a bus from KL to the Awana SkyWay base station, then the cable car up — buses run from a few points in the city, including KL Sentral and Genting-branded coach services, and the whole trip door-to-door runs a little over an hour before you even queue for the cable car. Driving is the other option, and it gets you to the temple stop without depending on cable car queues, though parking at the top can be tight on weekends.

Genting works as a day trip — up on the cable car, a few hours at the theme park or the casino, back down before dinner — but it also works as an overnight, especially if fog or a long queue eats your afternoon, or if you actually want to gamble past the point a day trip allows.
Worth knowing before you go
This isn't a nature escape, whatever the cloud forest on the way up suggests — it's a dense, commercial hilltop resort of hotels, malls, and rides, and it reads that way the moment you step off the cable car. Weekends and school holidays bring real crowds, particularly for the cable car and SkyWorlds, so a weekday visit buys you shorter queues. The other thing to plan for is the weather: it can be sunny in KL and genuinely cold and misty at the top, sometimes with the SkyWay running slower or pausing in bad conditions, so bring a layer even if you left the city in a t-shirt. None of that cancels the trip out — the views on a clear ride and the novelty of a casino resort in the clouds are real — just go in knowing what kind of place this is.
