Island-Hopping & the Southern Isles
A boat south to a freshwater lake ringed by jungle cliffs, empty white sandbars, and — further out — the coral of Pulau Payar.
The classic Langkawi island-hopping trip heads south from the main island to a cluster of smaller : Tasik Dayang Bunting, the "Pregnant Maiden Lake" — a freshwater lake in a sinkhole ringed by jungle cliffs, on the big southern island — and Beras Basah, a bright white sandbar for a swim. Further out, Pulau Payar Marine Park is the region's snorkelling and diving reef.
The two trips
Island-hopping (half a day, shared speedboat) does the lake and a sandbar or two — cheap, popular and a bit of a conveyor belt in peak season, but the lake is genuinely striking. Pulau Payar is a separate, longer day trip to a proper coral park about 30 km south.
Watch out
Pulau Payar is capped at 100 visitors a week, closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and closed entirely for a stretch each year (around March–May). Only Kedah-approved operators may run it — book through a reputable one.
Tip
Agree the itinerary and price before boarding, and go on a calm-sea morning.
