Langkawi is genuinely safe — violent crime against tourists is rare and you can walk Cenang at night without worry. The scams here go after your wallet, not you: inflated island-hopping prices, a jet-ski "damage" claim, the odd taxi overcharge, and timeshare touts. Know the four below and you've covered almost everything.
The island-hopping tout
The classic. Touts on Pantai Cenang beach and around Kuah jetty quote wildly different prices for the same shared 3-stop boat trip — sometimes double the going rate, sometimes selling a "private charter" you didn't ask for. The fix: know the real shared-boat price before you talk to anyone, book through a proper operator or your hotel, and don't hand cash to a man with a laminated sign on the sand.

The one that turns nasty. You rent a jet-ski or banana boat, bring it back, and the operator points to a pre-existing scratch and demands a big "repair" fee — occasionally with a crowd for pressure. It's a known play across Malaysian beach spots.
Watch out
Before you touch any watersport craft, film a slow walk-around of the whole hull and send it to yourself with the timestamp. Rent only from an operator with a real shopfront, agree the price and the excess in writing, and never leave your passport as a deposit — a photocopy or cash bond only.
Taxi and transport overcharges
Langkawi runs a fixed-fare zone taxi system — there are no meters, so a driver who "forgets" the rate can quote high. Use the prepaid counters at the airport and Kuah jetty, or confirm the fixed fare before you get in. Grab exists but is patchy and can surge above the taxi rate, especially late and for return trips.
Timeshare & "holiday club" pitches
Around Cenang you may be offered a scratch card, free gift or "survey" that ends in a long, high-pressure timeshare or holiday-club presentation. It's not a robbery, just a grind designed to get a deposit out of you. Smile, say tak nak, and keep walking.
