The North Coast — Tanjung Rhu & Datai

The tranquil, expensive end — secluded coves backed by limestone and rainforest, the island's best beaches and its finest resorts.

Langkawi's north coast is the quiet, scenic, expensive end of the island. Tanjung Rhu is a wide, pale beach hemmed by karst outcrops and backed by mangroves; Datai Bay, tucked into the rainforested northwest, is the island's most exclusive corner. In between, the Temurun waterfall drops off the jungle escarpment near the road to Datai. Little nightlife, all tranquillity.

Who it's for

Come here to be still. This is where to splurge on a rainforest resort, walk an empty beach at dawn, and swap the Cenang bar strip for the sound of hornbills. It's a 45–60 minute drive from the west beaches, so most people either stay up here or make a full day of it.
