The West Beaches

The island's tourist heart: two kilometres of west-facing sand, the bars and rental shops, and quieter coves just to the south.

Langkawi's west coast is where the island faces the sunset and where most visitors stay. Pantai Cenang is the busy centre of it — sand, bars, dive shops, jet-skis — and Pantai Tengah, just south, is its calmer sibling with many of the better restaurants. It's the most convenient base on the island: flat, walkable, and the shortest drive to the cable car and the north.

Where to base yourself

Cenang for walk-everywhere convenience and nightlife; Tengah for the same beach with less noise; the far south end for quiet. Wherever you land, you'll want a cheap rental car or scooter to reach the rest of the island — the west beaches are a great base but not the whole story.
