Campuhan Ridge Walk

By Kadek Surya, Bali-based writer⚠ Researched carefully — but I haven't walked this one myself yet · July 2026

The Campuhan Ridge Walk is the easiest genuinely lovely thing to do in Ubud: a free, roughly 2km grassy spine running between two river valleys, five minutes from the centre. The catch is simple and everyone ignores it — go at sunrise or don't bother. By 9am it's an exposed, shadeless oven full of people in the same photo you wanted.

The one thing that makes or breaks it

The packed-earth path climbing through the ridge's tall grass — almost no shade, which is exactly why you go early.

There is almost no shade on the ridge. That's the whole story. Walk it at 6–7am and it's cool, gold-lit, and nearly empty; walk it at 10am and you're grinding uphill in full equatorial sun with a queue for every viewpoint. Sunrise also beats the influencer crowd that descends on the pretty kajeng grass and the lone tree everyone photographs. Bring water, wear a hat, and set an early alarm — that single decision is the difference between "best free hour in Ubud" and "why did we do this."

Where it actually starts

The trailhead is at Gunung Lebah, a temple tucked in the river gorge just west of central Ubud, where two streams meet — campuhan means "confluence." Walk or scooter down Jalan Raya Campuhan, cross the old bridge, and look for the path beside the temple; a short paved rise delivers you onto the open ridge.

Pura Gunung Lebah at the confluence — the temple you pass to reach the ridge. A working temple, so dress and behave accordingly.

Start pointPura Gunung Lebah, off Jalan Raya Campuhan — ~10 min walk or a quick ride from Ubud Palace
Length~2 km to the warungs at the far end; out-and-back, so ~4 km total
DifficultyEasy — one gentle climb, otherwise flat; a paved/packed path, fine in trainers
CostFree. No ticket, no parking mafia at the trailhead
Best timeSunrise (~06:00) for light, cool air and space; sunset is prettier but busier and you finish in the dark

How far to actually walk

Morning over the Campuhan valley — the cool, gold-lit hour before the heat and the crowds arrive.

Most people turn around too early, at the photogenic open stretch. Keep going. The ridge dips into a strip of tall grass and then reaches a cluster of and small cafés (Karsa Kafé, Warung Bukit Campuhan and neighbours) after about 2km — a fine place for a coconut or breakfast before you head back. Beyond them the path continues into the rice fields and villages of Bangkiang Sidem if you want a longer loop, but the ridge itself effectively ends at the cafés.

Watch out

Those end-of-ridge cafés know they've got a captive audience. Prices are tourist- tier and service can be slow — fine for a drink and the view, but don't expect a bargain. If you're hungry, you'll eat better and cheaper back in town.

Sunset instead?

The ridge and the Ubud rooftops it overlooks — minutes from town, which is why the walk back in the dark is short but completely unlit.

Sunset light on the ridge is genuinely beautiful and the temperature's kinder than midday — but you'll share it with a crowd, and you're walking back in the dark with no lighting on the path. If you go for sunset, carry a phone torch and start back before the last colour fades. On balance, sunrise wins: same light, fewer people, and you've banked the best of the day before breakfast.

Tip

The walk needs no guide — but if you'd rather fold it into a wider Ubud morning (rice terraces, a temple, a waterfall) with a driver handling logistics, a half-day tour is the easy option.

Honest verdict

Worth it? Yes — with the sunrise asterisk. It's not a hike or a wilderness experience; it's a short, scenic stroll on a grassy ridge, minutes from town, for no money. Do it early and it's one of the nicest free hours you'll have in Bali. Do it mid-morning and you'll wonder what the fuss was about. Skip it only if you truly can't face an early start.
