Datai Bay
A crescent of sand under ten-million-year-old rainforest — the island's most exclusive bay, and its least accessible.
Datai Bay is the island's most exclusive address — a 1.5 km crescent of sand on the remote northwest, backed by rainforest said to be around ten million years old, and home to a couple of world-famous luxury resorts and a championship golf course. It's beautiful and deliberately undeveloped. The honest catch: getting onto the beach as a non-guest takes some doing.
Can you visit if you're not staying?
No Malaysian beach is legally private, but land access here is tightly controlled — the main road in is gated at a resort, so you generally can't just drive down to the sand. In practice, non-guests reach the beach by dining or booking a spa at a public-facing resort restaurant and using the beach as a patron, or via the rainforest trail from the headland. There are no vendors, water sports or easy parking — that's the point.
Note
The wildlife is the sleeper attraction — dusky langurs, colugos and hornbills in some of the oldest rainforest in the region. Come for nature and quiet, not a beach-club day.
