Kuah is Langkawi's capital and the point most people arrive at by sea. It's not a resort town — it's where islanders actually shop, eat and catch the ferry — and that's its appeal. The landmark is Dataran Lang (Eagle Square), the giant reddish-brown eagle statue by the jetty, and the reason to linger is the duty-free shopping: chocolate, drink and cookware at a fraction of mainland prices.
What to do here
Photograph the eagle, stock up duty-free (read the carry-off rules first), and eat where the queues of locals are. Kuah is also the main jumping-off point for island-hopping and the Payar snorkelling trips. Beyond that it's a town, not a sight — most travellers base on the beaches and come here for an afternoon.
