Pulau Payar Marine Park is Langkawi's proper snorkelling and diving day trip — a protected cluster of islands about 30 km south, run mostly to a moored floating platform beside the reef, where baby black-tip reef sharks cruise the shallows. It's a full day out and the priciest single activity on the island. The thing that catches people out isn't the price — it's the closures.

Watch out
Pulau Payar is closed every Tuesday and Wednesday, and closed entirely for a stretch each year (reported around March–May). The exact seasonal window is reported inconsistently and the park has had "closed until further notice" periods — reconfirm directly before you book anything else around it. A weekly visitor cap is also discussed, so book ahead.
Honest expectations
Book the floating-platform package (not a beach-only trip) for the better reef, buffet lunch and changing rooms. Set expectations on the coral: recent reviews report bleaching and a crowded platform. It's a fun, easy day for beginners and reef-fish spotting; veteran divers may find it underwhelming for the money. Confirm the departure jetty the day before — operators rotate between piers.
