The Kilim Karst Geoforest Park is Langkawi at its most primeval: some 100 km² of river winding between towering grey cliffs on the island's northeast coast. You see it by boat, launching from the Kilim jetty, and a good trip is the single best half-day on the island. It's also where the difference between a good operator and a bad one matters most.
What a good Kilim tour is — and isn't
A good trip drifts through the mangroves, ducks into a bat or crocodile cave, stops at the fish farm, and gives the limestone and the birdlife room to impress. A bad trip is a speedboat that races between photo stops and throws chicken skin into the air so sea eagles dive for the camera. That eagle-feeding is discouraged — it's bad for the birds and against the park's own conservation aims — so book an operator that markets a nature cruise, not an eagle show, and tell them up front you'd rather they didn't feed.

Go early for calm water, active wildlife and cooler air, and agree the route and price before you get in the boat.

Two different boat trips, often confused. Kilim is mangroves, caves and cliffs on Langkawi's own east coast — the geology and the quiet. Island-hopping heads south to the Pregnant Maiden Lake and open-sea sandbars — more swimming, more crowds, more speed. If you only do one and you like nature over beaches, do Kilim.
Watch out
The macaques and monkeys along the water will board a boat for an unguarded bag. Keep everything zipped and don't hand over food.
